Saturday morning (October
19th) at the NYC Independent Film Festival, I had the opportunity to watch the
film documentary, “West Encounters East,” by Stella M. Holmes, an
Argentinean art historian, who is passionate about art and the mixture of
cultures.
The documentary displays
the conflicts and assimilation of cultures faced by the Japanese in Sao Paulo –
home of the largest community of Japanese outside Japan - through the work of
renowned Japanese-Brazilian artists.
What captivated my interest
was the cultural aspects of both countries captured in the work of these
artists, considering Japan and Brazil are extremely different in many ways.
While Japanese are deep thinkers and reserved people, Brazilians are more
spontaneous and outgoing. Also, according to the artists in the documentary,
Brazil is full of vivid colors, which gives them more room for creativity. For
that reason, it was amazing to watch the work of Japanese-Brazilian artists
mixing both cultures and finding a common point between West and East.
To art and culture lovers,
this documentary will take you into an enchanting journey through two different
worlds that become close through art.
